The Drift: An American Cattle Drive, Best Documentary
“The Drift: An American Cattle Drive”, supported by a Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund grant, won the top prize for documentary feature film in October at the Wild Bunch Film Festival in Willcox, Arizona.
“The Drift” is a feature-length documentary about a Wyoming cattle drive that goes from the Green River Valley to the high meadows near the Continental Divide in the Wind River Mountains. Families in the area have saddling up to do the near-100-mile drive on horseback for over a century, making it one of the oldest and longest cattle drives on horseback in the American West.
The film was produced by Caldera Productions, based in Lander, WY, with shooting stretched over five years.
Producer Geoff O’Gara thanked the cowhands and the local historians for providing a wealth of stories and photographs. While it was difficult traveling with the herd and shooting in the high country, O’Gara said the hardest thing was winning the trust of the old families who run the Drift. “They’re a little wary of media, the same as they are of grizzly bears and blizzards,” said O’Gara. “They’ll want to see you wrestle a calf or two before they invite you to dinner. But once you’ve got their trust, they give you their whole life, without too much polish on the boots.”
In addition to the Wild Bunch award, “The Drift” was recognized for Best Screenplay by the Western Writers of America. It will be screening at various events and festivals in 2019-20, and is available for viewing on DVD and digital rental and download.
